Se le conoció mundialmente como “El Rey del Timbal”, pero también podía tocar con toda maestría, batería, congas, claves, piano, saxofón y clarinete, lo que le permitió crear una Escuela en todos lo géneros musicales en los que incursionó.
Para describir su trayectoria hay que remontarse al comienzo mismo de todo movimiento musical en los que participó a lo largo de su brillante y exitosa carrera. Se hizo grande entre los grandes. Experimentó y se cultivó junto a consagrados nombres que escribieran brillantes páginas en la historia de la música contemporánea.
No se puede sin omitir uno solo, los grandes talentos entre la legión de figuras e intérpretes que compartieron con él su música. Y tampoco se puede mencionar tantos y tantos espectáculos en los que participó como “Excelentísimo Embajador de la Música Latinoamericana por el mundo”.
Por sus más de cien álbumes grabados, cuatrocientas composiciones escritas e infinidad de arreglos para los más variados intérpretes y géneros musicales, le fueron concedido los más importantes premios, distinciones y reconocimientos, entre muchos de ellos, el codiciado premio Grammy que le fuera otorgado en cinco oportunidades.
Con la muerte del Maestro Tito Puente, ocurrida el 31 de mayo del año 2000, se cierra un importante ciclo en la historia de la música latinoamericana, y al mismo tiempo, su nombre adquiere dimensión de leyenda.
